Americans use over 14 billion plastic bags each year. Even though I preemptively try to tell cash register attendants that I don't need a bag as they're bagging up my groceries I continue to amass plastic bags. And although reusing those plastic bags is better than just throwing them away we, at the Co-op, would like to encourage people to use fewer "new" bags. The Co-op currently has plastic bags for people to use to get bulk items. We also reuse plastic grocery bags that others have collected and donate to the Co-op. But in keeping with our desire to encourage people to reduce the amount of plastic we all use, the Co-op is beginning to offer cloth bags to purchase hold their bulk items. Since we don't want to alienate new shoppers to the store we aren't immediately getting rid of all the plastic bags, but we will gradually be phasing them out. If you don't have your own bags that you take to the store, or you get to the Co-op only to realize you've forgotten them at home again we sell bags that will hold all your groceries. Beginning in December, every time you bring in an alternative means of transporting your bulk purchases (jar, tupperware, re-used bags), your name will be entered into a drawing for a $5 Co-op Gift Card at the end of the month. The current flour/rice bags that Linda Jones makes for us are made out of hemp cloth and are available for purchase for $3.13. We also will have a couple other kinds of larger grocery bags). By the summer of '08, we hope to stop offering plastic bulk bags altogether. 3. Many of the plates we use for the meal plan have been getting chips or cracks in them, thus violating health code standards. So we're putting out a plea for more plates. If you had plates your were thinking about taking to the Salvation Army or getting rid of, consider giving them to the Co-op. 4. Last Sunday we didn't have freshly baked bread because our student bakers were on break; however, there will be bread this Sunday (11/25) so plan to come by the store Sunday afternoon; it always seems to sell out quickly! But remember, this Sunday our hours are 1pm-5pm. 5. Happy Thanksgiving! The Co-op's hours are a little different around the holiday. We won't be open on Thanksgiving itself, but for those of you who need last minute things for your meal, we will be open Wed. night until 6. We've got cranberries on sale for $2.70, organic pumpkin pie mix for $2.71, organic Arrowhead Mills stuffing, as well as all our regular products, check us out. Wed. (11/21) 11am - 6pm Thur.
